The Meaning of Jewellery

#morethansparkle

When we talk about jewellery, people immediately think of big shiny diamonds and a luxurious lifestyle.  But jewellery is not just about the parts that make it up, the metal and the stones.  As I have learned, the meaning of jewellery is the stories and most importantly, the memories.

No matter the design, style, or VALUE, there is one thing that has remained the same for every piece of jewellery that has crossed my desk, the item’s unique story. From brand new engagement rings selected with tender love and care, to well-loved (and well worn) chains that display important charms and keep sakes.  Jewellery is chosen to mark important occasions or used as a sign of affection.

For me, jewellery signifies even more as it is a passion of mine that I have dedicated my career to.”

Alanna Campbell, Owner AC Appraisals

I have always been fascinated by colour and anything that sparkles. I mean, how could you not be fascinated? Growing up with an interest in art and science, my first introduction to gems was a high school chemistry class where I learned about the unique chemical structure of diamonds.  However, my real jewellery journey started a little while later with a little bit of luck.  During a shopping trip to a local jewellery store, the owner noticed I had a keen eye while admiring items in the showcase.  I was hired to work there, and I quickly became immersed in the jewellery world.

Something that I noticed right away was that people from all walks of life were choosing jewellery to mark important occasions.  Whether they were selecting a piece for a friend, a loved one, a newborn baby or to remember someone who had passed, the common thread was the meaning behind the piece.

Take this necklace for example.  This is the piece that altered my path in life and landed me my first jewellery job.  It was not expensive by any means, but it was totally me; bright, colourful, sparkly, and unique.  This necklace marked the beginning of my jewellery journey.  Even now, when I put this necklace on, I remember how far I have come.  From being a customer who liked shiny things, to being the expert that clients seek advice from.

How about you? What is your favourite piece of jewellery? When we wear these important items everyday, they become in a way a part of who we are.  Sometimes it isn’t until someone else comments on it, that we step back and realize how deep that connection truly is.

How many times have you commented on someone’s jewellery and they begin to share an interesting tale? For me, it is quite frequently, and it is one of my favourite parts of the jewellery appraisal process.  From items that have been passed down from generation to generation to newly acquired pieces, with each item I feel the emotional connection when clients begin to tell their story.

Hearing so many incredible stories, I wanted to ensure that they are not lost.  One way that I preserve these stories is by including them in the notes area of my appraisal reports. Documenting the stories helps to ensure they are preserved for future generations.

With the holidays fast approaching, what better time to share these memories than during the month of December?  I have collected a series of real jewellery stories to show it is #morethansparkle.  Join me every day in December for a new story.  Do you have your own jewellery story to share? Let me know, I would love to hear it!
